We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother, Vivian Christina Smith-Mclean, at the Central Carleton Nursing Home on June 4, 2025, at the age of 97 with her family by her side.
Mom was born in Simonds on November 7, 1927, the eldest child of the late Harley and Muriel (Breen) Shaw. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband and our father, Owen Smith; second husband, Harry Mclean; daughter, Deborah and son-in-law Joseph Taylor; sisters Wilma Johnson and Elva and brother-in-law Ralph Hoyt; brothers Dawson Shaw and Earl Shaw.
Mom is survived by her children Jack (Lori) Smith, Amber (David) Wishart, James (Kim) Smith, Arthur (Bev) Smith and Bruce (Debbie) Smith; her grandchildren Darren Smith, Amy Smith (Michael Antworth), Joshua Taylor, Michael Taylor, Mitchell (Elliott) Taylor, Alexander (Dawn) Wishart, Daniel Wishart (Lori McEvoy), Erin (Ashley) Wishart, Jeremy (Katelynn) Smith, Jamie Dow (Sharon Koubi), Ashley (Matthew) Crabbe, Samantha Smith (Joe Hosford), Carley Smith (Greg Richard) and Kate Smith; 19 great grandchildren; brother Alton (Jean) Shaw; brother-in-law Jack Johnson; sisters in law Grace Shaw, Louise Keith, and Dawn (Stiles) Greer. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mother resided in Simonds the majority of her life first as a daughter, then a wife and mother, and finally as a grandmother. She enjoyed the community and was a member of the Simonds Women's Institute for over 40 years and an active member of the Women's Missionary Society.
The family wishes to express Special Thanks to Dr Stocek and the staff at Carleton Place and Central Carleton Nursing Home for their care in keeping our mother safe and comfortable for the past 14 years.
Visitation will be 12:00 - 2:00 on Monday, June 9, at Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville.
The funeral service will follow at 2:00 in the funeral home chapel. Mom will be taken home to Simonds and will be laid to rest next to Dad in the Lower Simonds Cemetery.
The family has suggested donations to the Middle Simonds Cemetery or Central Carleton Nursing Home, in lieu of flowers.
"You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all she's left
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she's gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on".
