Obituary

In appreciation of a life well lived, Lady Veronica (Vicky) Kathleen Mary Adelaide Primrose (Kerrigan-Hadden) McKellar, age 88, died peacefully on January 10th at The Upper River Valley Hospital.

Vicky was born in 1934 to the late William and Honor (Kerrigan) Hadden in Glasgow, Scotland. She was the oldest of four girls. She trained as a registered nurse in Aberdeen, Scotland, and further trained as a midwife in Edinburgh, Scotland. Vicky met her husband Donald McKellar in Scotland (1956) before immigrating to Canada, in October of 1957 to be married on November 30th, 1957.

She was well known for her role as a maternity and extramural nurse. A trip to the grocery store with Mom would often be met by a mother reminding her she delivered their baby. The family would often find themselves chuckling, as most times Vicky would be asking who the person they were speaking to was after they had walked away. She was a founding member of the original Carleton County Animal Shelter in 1995. She was a beloved "Fur Mom" to many adopted dogs and cats, as well as a few strays that became family as well. Anyone that knew mom knew she was a huge animal lover and she would often say she preferred animals over people.

What she lacked in size (4'10"), she more than made up for in wit. She was many things to many people. To her children; she was a best friend, great listener, moral compass, and truth-teller (whether you wanted it or not). Mom always kept it real! One of her favorite roles was being called Nanny. She and Maggie shared a very loving bond and a close relationship. Mom was grateful for the many years of close friendship she shared with Anna Gallivan, Tina English, and Doreen Shaw as well as many others. Mom always stayed connected with her Scottish relatives and looked forward to yearly visits from her niece Bernadette and her family Ian, Connor (Lisa & Halle), and Ciara each summer as well as the frequent phone calls and Bernadette's annual Christmas cake!

Vicky is survived by; her children Linda (Randy) MacFarlane, Donnie McKellar, Kevin McKellar (Lester Wood), and Maureen McKellar. Her granddaughter Maggie MacFarlane. Sister Eileen (George) Baldwin of England as well as three nieces and three nephews and their extended families of Great Britain.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Donald McKellar; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth McKellar and Kathleen Laporte. Also, her two beloved sisters Diana Easton and Jacqueline Shaw.

Vicky's family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the kindness and support she received from the staff at the Upper River Valley Hospital.

In keeping with Mom's wishes, there will be no funeral service. Arrangements are under the care of Carleton Funeral Home, Jacksonville NB. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carleton County Animal Shelter, DunRommin' Stray and Rescue, or a charity of the donor's choice.
