Judith Karen
Saunders
February 3, 1944 – January 5, 2026
It is with deep sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Judith Karen (Belyea) Saunders, of Fosterville and a long-time resident of Woodstock, on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Upper River Valley Hospital, following a very brief illness. Judy was 81 years old.
Born on February 3, 1944, in Hartland, New Brunswick, Judy was the beloved daughter of the late Maynard and Phyllis (Underhill) Belyea. From an early age, she carried with her a quiet strength, a gentle spirit, and a deep sensitivity that would shape the way she lived and loved throughout her life.
Judy is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Michael Saunders; her cherished children, Michelle (Saunders) Pothorin and Andrew Saunders; and her seven adored grandchildren—Boden, Brent, Azura, Brandon, Max, Sophia, and Locke—each of whom held a special place in her heart. She is also survived by her brother Larry Belyea and his wife Anne (Fournier) Belyea, and her brother-in-law Lloyd Adams.
She was predeceased by her parents and by her dear sister, Diane (Belyea) Adams, whom she missed deeply.
Judith was a kind, gentle, and gracious soul who touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a proud and tender grandmother, and a caring sister and daughter. Her warmth, compassion, and quiet wisdom were gifts freely given and deeply felt.
Although trained as an operating room nurse, Judy ultimately followed her true calling as an artist. Her creativity flourished, and her magnificent paintings found homes in private collections around the world. Demonstrating remarkable dedication and courage, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Victoria at the age of fifty—an achievement that reflected her lifelong commitment to learning, beauty, and self-expression.
Judy also shared a great love of travel with her husband, Michael. Together, they explored more than forty countries, embracing new cultures, landscapes, and experiences with curiosity and joy, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
In keeping with Judy's wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring, when family and friends will gather to honour her remarkable life, her gentle spirit, and the love she gave so freely.
She will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered, always.
