Obituary

With great sadness, the family of J. Maurice Corbett (Senior) announces his passing on Thursday, May 28, 2020, at the Oromocto Public Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Johnville, N.B., on July 2, 1933, he was the son of Francis Joseph (Frank) Corbett and Bridget (Hall) Corbett.

He was predeceased by his parents, and also by his wife M. Rita (Kelly) Corbett, who died in January 2007 after 45 years of marriage.

He is survived by his children: Cecilia and Lois of Fredericton, Monica of Kingston, Ontario, and James Maurice Junior (Jim, husband of Sun-Mi Kim) of Seoul, South Korea.

In addition, he is survived by his sister Cecilia of Fredericton and brothers Alvin of Saint Stephen and Louis of Woodstock, as well as a large number of nieces and nephews.

Many of those nieces and nephews will recall summer visits at Maurice and Rita's farm in Johnville, N.B.

After his children were raised, he and Rita continued to live on the farm until her death, at which time he left Johnville to live with his daughters, first in Toronto and then in Fredericton.

A faithful Catholic, he attended the parish church of Saint John the Evangelist for many years, and Saint Dunstan's during his latter years in Fredericton.

He was honoured to be a member of the local Knights of Columbus council, and to serve a term as Grand Knight.  He had many friends among the Knights, and was also active in politics.

Maurice's family wishes to acknowledge the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Oromocto Public Hospital's William R. Duffie Unit, whose professionalism made Maurice's final days calm and comfortable, and for whose kindness we are ever grateful.

Regrettably, due to the current restrictions on large gatherings as a measure to contain the spread of COVID-19, there will be no visitation nor funeral service. A Memorial Service will be planned for later in the year.
