Obituary

We, the family of Dorothy Ann Hemsley (Mailman), are deeply saddened to announce her death on Thursday, January 13th, 2022, at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, NB. Dorothy, affectionately known by "Dottie" to many of her family, was born in Sherbrooke, NS to the late Ada and Ellsworth Mailman on October 27, 1954. As a young child her family relocated to the little village of Main-a-Dieu in Cape Breton. There she spent her childhood with her many brothers and sisters. Later, as she approached her adult years, Dorothy moved to Glace Bay, NS, where she raised her two loving children, with whom she had a bond like no other. At 49 years old, Dorothy met her loving husband Donald, and moved to Ontario where she grew her family by two sons and two daughters. Dorothy loved like no other, and to think of Donald's children as her own was no different. During this time, she developed a special bond with her "newfound" son Erik, whom she truly thought of as one of her own. While Dorothy and Don spent many great years together in Ontario, they eventually relocated back to Cape Breton so she could be closer to her son Jamie and his family. As his family grew older, she and Don then moved to Jacksonville, NB, to be closer to her daughter Joanne and her young family. There she spent the last of her days doing what she did best, loving and caring for others. Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of almost 16 years, Donald; children Jamie (Ashley) of Sydney NS, Joanne (Adam) of Newburg NB, Erik (Crystal) of Woodstock NB; stepchildren Vivian (Peter), Raymond, and Susan (Rob); grandchildren, who owned a special place in her heart, Michaela, Sarah, Zoe, Mia, Olivia, Ben and Elizabeth, as well as her great grandson, Kaizen. She was also survived by siblings Gertrude Moore, Ivy Wadden, Louise Baggs, Wilfred (Marilyn) Mailman, Martha (Eric) Timmons, Ruth (Terry) Butts, and Jeffrey (Babylin) Mailman, as well as sisters-in-law Edna Mailman, Marilyn Mailman, Cathy Mailman, Alice Mailman, and brother-in-law Harry Gledhill. Dorothy also had many, many nieces, nephews and others whom she loved dearly. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Ada and Ellsworth Mailman; sisters Margaret and Lucy (in infancy), Hilda, Sheila, and Rose; brothers Harvey, Albert, Francis and Lorence, as well as brothers-in-law Gerald, Walter, Jim, Daniel and Melvin. As her family, we wish to send our sincerest thanks to everyone who helped care for her in any capacity over the past six months. A special thank you to the staff at the Upper River Valley Hospital who helped ease our mother and her family through this most difficult time. Due to covid regulations, a small private family funeral will take place on January 21st, 2022, at MacMillan Memorial United Church in Catalone, Cape Breton, NS. arrangements entrusted to Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road, Jacksonville NB
