Donald Edwin Porter, an educator and proud New Brunswicker, passed away on October 28, 2026, at 76.

Born on August 9, 1950, Donald was the son of the late Elmer Porter (1920-1973) and Mary Taylor Porter (1927-2015). He was also predeceased by his brother, Richard E. Porter (1952-1986), and his sister, Carol Ann Porter (1962-2003).

He is survived by his son, Jeremy R. Porter; his brother, Gordon L. Porter (Carolyn); one nephew, two nieces and several cousins from both the Taylor and Porter families.

Donald grew up in the village of Debec, Carleton County, where his father operated the local general store. He attended school in Debec and graduated from Southern Carleton School in 1968. He later attended the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, earning three degrees: Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education, and Master of Education.

Donald devoted 35 years of his professional life to public education in New Brunswick, serving as a teacher, school administrator, and educational leader. He began his teaching career at Broadway School in Woodstock and later taught at Southern Carleton Middle School. He subsequently served as vice-principal of Harvey Elementary School and principal of Douglas Elementary School.

From the beginning of his career, Donald demonstrated an exceptional commitment to his students and their success. One memorable incident from his early teaching years at Broadway School captured the admiration he inspired. During a parent-teacher meeting, a father explained that he had come specifically to meet "Superman," as his young son spoke of his teacher.

His leadership abilities led to his appointment as Supervisor of Elementary Education for School Districts 26 (Fredericton) and 27 (Harvey/McAdam). Among his professional accomplishments was serving as a featured editor of an elementary reading program published in Canada and used nationwide.

Donald ended his educational career as principal of Royal Road Elementary School on Fredericton’s north side. There, he built strong relationships with students, parents, teachers, and school staff. He placed particular emphasis on literacy development, inclusive education, and ensuring every student had the opportunity to learn and succeed. One of his most memorable practices as principal was making regular classroom visits, where he delighted in reading aloud to students from his favourite books.

A dedicated, long-standing supporter of the Progressive Conservative Party, he devoted considerable time and energy to political campaigns and party activities.

Although Donald spent much of his career in the Fredericton area, he never lost his strong attachment to Debec, the village where he grew up. He maintained a lasting connection to his roots in Carleton County.

Donald will be remembered for his contributions to New Brunswick’s education system and the people and places that shaped his life.

The interment will take place at Lower Meductic Cemetery on Wednesday, November 4, at 1:30 p.m., with a graveside service for family and friends.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Carleton Funeral Home, Woodstock, New Brunswick.
