Obituary

Anne Elizabeth Vangalen passed away peacefully in Oakville, Ontario, on April 19, 2026, at the age of 81, following a catastrophic stroke while attending a family wedding in Cancun, Mexico. Born on November 30, 1944, in Woodstock, New Brunswick, Anne was the daughter of Edna (Noble) and Rankine Vail and the second oldest of four children. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Vangalen (2008); her brother Marvin (1961); and her brother Rob Vail (2017). She is survived by her sister Maxine (Don) and sister-in-law Debbie Vail. Anne lived a full and vibrant life, guided by a deep sense of independence and a zest for living. She embraced each day on her own terms and took great pleasure in life’s finer comforts—whether enjoying cruises, indulging in spa days, treating herself to facials, or keeping up her hair and nails. She took pride in her health and youthful appearance, carrying herself with confidence and grace. Her love of animals, especially dogs, was a constant throughout her life. She also found joy in knitting and crocheting, creating many sweaters with patience and care. A passionate Toronto sports fan, Anne rarely missed cheering on her favorite teams. Anne pursued her education in nursing from Halifax Infirmary of Nursing school in Halifax, Nova Scotia and began a career defined by compassion and dedication to others. She later worked as a librarian, reflecting her lifelong appreciation for learning and community. It was through a blind date in Shearwater that Anne met Joseph, the love of her life. Together, they built a life that took them from Dartmouth to Montreal, then to Orangeville, and finally to Oakville, where Anne resided for the past 38 years. Anne was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her children Robert (Deb), Heidi (Jess), and Michael (Petra), and her cherished grandchildren Ben (Raven), Nick, Matt, Sarah, Christopher, Ryan, Zachary, and Zoë, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy. Anne will be remembered for her strength, her independence, and her ability to find joy in both the grand and simple moments of life. Her legacy is one of resilience, warmth, and a reminder to live life fully and unapologetically.

Ann will be laid to rest in the Lower Jacksonville Cemetery with her parents and brother
